PixelPalaces - VIEWING SVG FILES

Contents page

This page was writen in September 2006 and was last revised in June 2013. All information is either taken from the official websites of the software in question or is from experimentation by PixelPalaces (unless otherwise stated all experiments were conducted on a Pentium 4 with Windows XP). If you think the information here is out of date or inacurate or you know of other software you think should be covered, let me know!

Background

SVG is a non-propriatory vector graphics format with optional interactivity and animation. In other words it's a way of doing pictures on computers which is very useful for a lot of things but so far very under used. Internet Explorer (and until recently most other browsers) doesn't suport it without a plug-in. To date, the best and probably most widely used way of viewing SVG files has been with the Adobe SVG viewer version 3 plug-in (although Opera is now about as good).

Programs

Adobe SVG viewer
Download page
Plug-in3Very good but lacked some features such as forien-object. Installing in browsers other than Internet Explorer can be problematic. Adobe are no longer developing it and it's uncertain how long it will available for.
AmayaBrowser11.4.4Supports SMIL animation but not JavaScript (diametrically opposite to Firefox and Renesis). As most the SVG's on this site are pretty useless without JavaScript, this isn't a lot of use for viewing PixelPalaces SVG's. If there's a Facebook like button on a page, a huge notice appears saying that this browser isn't supported, probably destroying most that page's functionality (this perhaps should be an issue that W3C should raise with Facebook).
Corel SVG viewerPlug-inSimilar but not identical capabilities to the Adobe viewer. Corel seem to have lost interest in SVG so the future availablity and support of this product is in question.
Google ChromeBrowser31.0.1650.57

Hot zones are invisible but receive events. Some (most?) filters work. Javascript and SMIL don't usually work if they're trigured by the beginning or end of an SMIL animation. Can be paned by Shift+drag, the viewBox remains in place and things originally outside it can be revealed. Pan can be painfully slow with more complicated frames. Ctrl and mousewheel results in a box appearing with a zoom percentage and a button to return to defaul but the size of the picture doesn't change. No easy way to get back to the original position.

Orientation
Works really well
Title Page
  • Part I link the wrong color.
  • Background consists of curved grey and white lines on a white/grey background, it should look like space with lots of stars.
Part I
  • Frame 1 - When Dactura rolled is over, it trigures the animation and moves to the next frame but the number 1 or the nav bar remains white and the number 2 remains black.
  • Frame 7 - Dawn's bikini top too small and in the wrong place. Dawn's hot zone does appear (it's done in a different way from most of them).
  • Frame 10 - No name on user icon.
  • Frame 11 - Fades in and out but does not move on to next frame.
  • Frame 13 - Fades in and out but does not move on to next frame. No text on badges.
Part II
  • Frame 7 - Dose not move to next frame after animation.
  • Frame 12 - Dose not move to next frame after animation.
Part III
  • Frame 1 - No bubbles after Buccannon's first one.
  • Frame 5 - Fades when clicked but doesn't move to next frame.
  • Frame 9 - Pupil of Meadowlark's right eye too large (use with transform attribute issue?).
  • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (the first one) doesn't recieve events.
Part IV
  • Frame 12 - Two bubbles appear at once when Dawn moused over and subsequant bubbles don't work.
  • Frames 20 and 23 - Trista's cheeks badly cropped making them look rectangular.
Part V
  • Frames 9 and 13 - Trista's cheeks badly cropped making them look rectangular.
  • Frame 23 - Gaps in pattern on window.
  • Frame 25 - Blur on breast missing.
  • Frame 32-33 - Satalite missing
Part VI
  • Frames 11-13 - No name on user icon.
  • Frame 15 - Parts of top left raspberry missing.
  • Frame 17 - Bubbles stop changing after Stag says, "If it was my fantasy, we'd have seen Henshaw not Sykes."
  • Frame 28 - Doesn't advance to next frame when clicked.
  • Frame 29 - Birds go back to original position which rather spoils the effect. Doesn't progress to next frame.
Part VII
  • Frame 4 - Body text missing from web page.
  • Frame 8 - Nothing happens when clicked and cursor doesn't turn into hand when over links.
  • Frames 15-17 - First hot zone doesn't work.
  • Frame 22 - Esther's picture missing.
  • Frame 32 - Hernandez's picture isn't placed quite correctly with regard to the clip path.
  • Frame 33 - Most color missing from lake water.

  • Frame 48 - Only Trista's lips appear.
  • Frame 57 - Armond's picture doesn't appear.
  • Frame 65 - Engine sound doesn't show.
Part VIII
  • Frame 10 - Water not filtered.
  • Frame 14 - No text on Noriega's badge.
  • Frame 15 - Messed up by poor zoom and pan.
  • Frame 16 - No text on Noriega's badge.
  • Frame 17 - Lake missing from map. No flashing line.
  • Frames 18-20 - No flashing lines. In frame 20 the hot zones stop working after Henshaw says, "Do you have anything else to ask me because I'm really busy?"
  • Frame 30-32 - Doesn't move to next frame at end of animation.
  • Frame 54 - Name missing from user icon.
  • Frame 59 - Hot zones stop working after Armond's brother says, "Mum and Dad had me and Nora change our names ..."
Part XI
  • Frame 1 - Tops missing from two rear domes. Parts of antenna disc missing.
  • Frame 3 - Parts of Earth transparant (but still have color) and stars visible through them. Animation painfully slow and jumpy. Upon clicking frame or "4" or next button on nav bar repeats animation instead of moving to next frame.
  • Frame 4 - Only possible to get to this by going to frame 5 and then clicking back button. Animation repeats when clicked, "5" clicked on nav bar or foward button clicked, instead of going to frame 5.
  • Frame 5 - Only possible to get to this by clicking on the "5" on the nav frame when on frame 3 or going back from frame 6. Repeats animation when clicked instead of going on to frame 6.
  • Frame 6 - Only possible to get to this by going from the end page or from frames 3 or 4.
  • Frame 7 - Dog's body missing (I think there's some bad code here I'll fix when I combine these files).
  • Frame 9 - Doesn't progress to next frame unless clicked.
  • Frame 11 - Doesn't progress to next frame unless clicked.
End
Works very well.
Internet ExplorerBrowser7 and 8Needs a plug-in to view SVG. Has trouble with object elements (sometimes used to embed SVG files in (X)HTML pages). However it works perfectly well with iframes and works fairly well (with the Adobe SVG viewer) to view Pixelpalaces. Unfortunately links in SVG files don't work if they have target attributes (which open the new page in a different window or frame). This is a feature I use frequently so it's easy to go back to the SVG file without resetting it. IE also doesn't let SVG files open new windows with JavaScript.
9Only works on Windows Vista and newer. Hasn't been tested. Has native SVG support. From what I've heard, it seems to have similar performance to Google Chrome and Firefox.
13.01Only works on Windows Vista and newer. Hasn't been tested. Has native SVG support. From what I've heard, it seems to have similar performance to Google Chrome and Firefox.
Mozilla FirefoxBrowser20.0

Shows files that are supposed to be displayed full screne as if they're set to about 75%. Most hot zones neigher appear nor receive events making it impossible to follow the plot.

13

Most SMIL works. Filters that require the background graphic don't seem to work and objects with them don't appear. The animated hot zone filter (uses the background graphic) doesn't appear but receives events. Generally fast but does seem to get slow on frames with large areas of filters and the function to close the final bubble seems particularly slow. Some image elements that reference SVG files scaled to large. It has a bizare inability to display local SVGZ files. There doesn't seem to be a way to zoom and pan svg files.

Orientation
Very good but Dragon Knights logo misplaced on navigation frame.
Book 1 title page
The filter in the background dosen't look right at all (it should look like space with stars). The blur filter on the dragon wing doesn't work well and looks very blocky.
Part I
  • Frame 10 - Text conversation doesn't appear.
  • Frame 15 - sky filter works reasonably well but not the one for the ground.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part II
  • Frame 8 - Text for door sound too small.
  • Frame 12 - repeated SMIL warnings but the animation seems to work. Frame number remains white.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part III
  • Frame 2 (and less noticably on Frame 3) - blur filters clipped awkwardly.
  • Frame 20 - sound effect text rather small.
  • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (the first in the frame) doesn't work.
  • Frame 27 - sound effect text rather small.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part IV
Very good.
  • Frame 20 and 23 - Horrible clipping of blur filter on Trista's cheeks.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part V
  • Frame 9 and 13 - Horrible clipping of blur filter on Trista's cheeks.
  • Frame 23 - Gaps in the patten on the window.
  • Frame 24 - Question mark on News graphic too small.
  • Frame 25 - Blur filter on breast doesn't work.
  • Frame 32 - Letters on molecule too small (external SVGZ file referenced with image). Satalite doesn't appear.
  • Frame 33 - As frame 32 except Buchannon possitioned incorrectly (image referencing SVGZ file).
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part VI
  • Frame 3 - Letters on molecule too small (external SVGZ file referenced with image).
  • Frames 11-13 - Wrong font on user icon.
  • Frame 28 - Letters on molecule too small (external SVGZ file referenced with image). Does not progress to next frame when clicked (need to use nav bar).
  • Frame 29 - As 28. Only one of the birds moves and animation returns to starting possition before progressing to next frame.
  • Frame 30 - As 28 but Buchannon (image referencing SVGZ) is incorrectly placed.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part VII
  • Frame 4 - Writing about Conflict Resolution service missing (but its title appears).
  • Frames 15 - Letters on molecule too small (external SVGZ file referenced with image). Fairy's hot zone (first one) doesn't recieve events.
  • Frames 16-17 - Dactura's hot zone (first one) doesn't receive events.
  • Frame 18 - Letters on molecule too small (external SVGZ files referenced with image). Buchannon (image referencing SVGZ) is incorrectly placed. Buchannon's hot zone doesn't receive events.
  • Frame 34 - Water (background) missing pressumably because of filter problems.
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part VIII
  • Frame 4 - horrible clipping on Trista's cheaks.
  • Frame 15 - Can't zoom or pan.
  • Frame 17 - Lake doesn't appear and no flashing line.
  • Frame 18-20 - Flashing line doesn't appear.
  • Frame 28 - Can't zoom or pan.
  • Frame 54 - Text on user icon almost invisible.
  • Frame 58 - Would be better if zoom and pan worked!
  • Navigation frame - Dragon Knights logo and archives icon too large.
Part XI
  • Frame 1 - Animation very slow and jerky.
  • Frame 3-5 - Slow and jerky animation.
  • Frame 7 - Dog's body missing (I think this is a problem with my code).
  • End
    Very good
OperaBrowser11 and 11.01Unfortunately has a bug related to JavaScript and the display attribute (requirers changing the display attribute of a container object and one or more of it's descendents). Don't worry if you don't know what that means. The problem is that this bug prevents most frames in this comic from appearing although their bubbles do (most hotzones are renedered and accept events but are invisible against a white background). This bug seems to get overriden by other javascript and SMIL, so ironically more complicated things tend to appear while simpler things don't. This bug is so problematic that it makes a good investigation of the features of this version difficult. The bug has been reported to the Opera development team.
    12.14

Generally very good and have fixed the bug that caused serious problems with version 11 and 11.01. Most problems seem related to text, particularly when fancy, tends to be missing or the wrong size. Text that should be removed tends not to be or to reappear when it isn't associated with another object (perhaps when it's not in a g element). Options to zoom in and out on right click menu but nothing seems to happen. Can be panned with Ctrl drag but this only seems to zoom in and can only be reversed by reloading. Text dissapears when it overlaps hot zones. Roll over on arrows (use elements) don't work.

    dt>Orientation
Very good except that things seem to get a bit confused when the girls are on the couch.
    Title Page
Very good except space ship antenna transparent and blurring on dragon's wing doesn't work well.
    Part I
    • Frame 10 - Name (text on a path in an SVG font) missing from user icon. Hot zones have a tendency to reapear and reactivate.
    • Frame 13 - Text missing from badges.
    Part II
    • Frame 2 - Speacker not clipped until hot zone removed.
    • Frame 3 - Hot zones keep reapearing and reactivating.
    • Frame 8 - Text for door lock sound too small.
    Part III
    • Frame 20 - Text for mirror breaking too small.
    • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear (most browsers seem to have trouble with this).
    • Frame 27 - Text for the Jael (abomible grey) hitting the wall too small.
    • Frames 31, 32 - Hot zones keep reapearing and reactivating.
    Part IV
    No problems!
    Part V
    • Frame 23 - Gaps in the pattern on the window.
    • Frame 24 - Question mark one news graphic too small.

    • Frame 22 - Trista's nipples look much to dark when her hot zone's active.
    Part VII
    • Frame 4-7 - Text at top of webpage missing. Serious confusion with hot zones and they sometimes don't progress to the next frame when clicked on (but you can use the navigation bar).
    • Frame 8 - Text at top of webpage missing.
    • Frame 10 - Filter for walls doesn't work.
    • Frame 15 and 18 - Letters on molecule too small.
    • Frame 33 - Filter for lake surface doesn't work.
    • Frame 34 - Water filter doesn't work.
    • Frame 37 - Filter for sand on beach doesn't work.
    • Frame 49-56 - Trista's cheeks look far too dark when her hot zone's active.
    • Frame 60 - Radial gradients on the Bird person's feathers don't work when his hot zone is active, rather spoiling the effect.
    • Frame 62 - Six's materialization field very pixilated and doesn't really look natural.
    • Frame 65 - Engine sound doesn't appear.
    Part VIII
    • Frame 10 - Water filter doesn't work.
    • Frame 14 - No text or Noriaga's badge.
    • Frame 15 - Rather messed up with poor pan and zoom.
    • Frame 16 - No text or Noriaga's badge. Hot zone on the phone isn't very obvious.
    • Frame 17 - Lake missing from map. No flashing line.
    • Frames 18-20 - No flashing line. This complicated sequence is seriously messed up with hot zones and bubbles reappearing when they shouldn't.
    • Frame 22 - Hot zones aren't at all obvious.
    • Frame 28 - Problems due to poor pan and zoom.
    • Frame 31-32 - Dematerialization and materialization fields look very pixilated and unnatural.
    • Frames 46, 48 and 50 - Filter on wall doesn't work.
    • Frame 54 - No text on user icon.
    • Frame 58 - No sound (fancy text) for explosion. Problems due to poor pan and zoom.
    • Frame 63-65 - Filters on dragon don't work.
    Part XI
    Very good.
    End
    Very good.
9.52 Mac versionSeems to have similar performance to the Windows version. Put's blue rectangles around objects clicked on (at least if they have onlcick attributes).
Renesis (last time I checked, this didn't work)Standalone, Internet Explorer plug-in and Windows Explorer plug-in1.1

Reasonable performance but still lacks SMIL and filters and a few text elements seem to be the wrong size. Animated hot zone filter appears as black shapes. Opens links with target attributes in the same window. The Standalone can't handle links to non-SVG files. Does display SVG's in image elements but doesn't get the dimentions right. The Windows Explorer plug-in produces thumbnails of SVG(Z) files in Windows Explorer.

I haven't tested the plug-in as there doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch back and fourth between it and the Adobe plug-in.

The Company developing this is having problems so it's future is looking uncertain particularly as the anouncement that IE 9 will have SVG support suggests that it will quickly become obsolete.

    Part I
    • Frame 1 - hot zone does not appear. Rolling over it results in warning that "Operation not supported by implimentation." Does not dissapear when you move on to other frames.
    • Frame 10 - Stag's vision of a warewolf appears but doesn't fade in and out.
    • Navigation page - only half of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part II
    • Frame 2 - only half of speaker appears and no hot zone.
    • Navigation page - only half of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part III
    • Frame 5 - need nav bar to move to next frame.
    • Frame 7 - hot zones displased slightly but their clipPaths aren't.
    • Frame 8 - Buchannon's hot zone displaced, but not it's clipPath.
    • Frame 9 - Stag's hot zone doesn't appear but it receives events.
    • Frame 11 - Tiffy doesn't appear but her hot zone does.
    • Frame 16 - mouseout doesn't work on Tiffy's hot zone.
    • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (first one in frame) doesn't appear or receive events.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part IV
    • Frame 18 - Tiffy's not zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
    • Frame 25 - Only hot zone appears (the rest, apart from the bubble, is an image referencing an SVGZ file) and doesn't accept events. Displaying this frame seems to crash the viewer so it refuses to do anything else except closing down.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part V
    • Frame 3 - Only hot zone appears and then the viewer refuses to do anything else except shutting down.
    • Frame 20 - Only half of Tiffy's hair appears and her right arm isn't visible. The navbar doesn't appear.
    • Frame 32 - Only parts of Stag appear (he's in an SVGZ file refeferenced by an image). The lines of the space ship diagram are very narrow and hard to see.
    • Frame 33 - Refuses to do anything except close down.
    • Frame 34 - Guest icon partly missing.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part VI
    • Frame 3 - Parts of Stag's face (in an SVGZ file referenced by an image) missing.
    • Frame 7 - Black, possibly because it has a filter over an image referencing a jpg file.
    • Frame 11-13 - Name on user icon too small and the wrong font.
    • Frame 16 and 19 - SMIL warning.
    • Frame 20 - SMIL warning. Tiffy and Dawn incorrectly cropped.
    • Frame 25 - 3 SMIL warnings.
    • Frame 27 - Tiffly's face missing (image referencing SVGZ file).
    • Frame 28 - parts of Stag's face (in an SVGZ file referenced by an image) missing.
    • Frame 29 - generates error message and continues to display the previous frame.
    • Frame 30 - File stops responding until being reloaded.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part VII
    • Frame 3 - Tiffy's picture only partly visible.
    • Frame 15 - Parts of Stag missing.
    • Frame 16-17 zoom doesn't work with SMIL warning.
    • Frame 18 - causes viewer to freez when Buchannon appears.
    • Frames 26, 28, 30 - zoom doesn't work with SMIL warning.
    • Frame 32 - Hernandez's picture doesn't appear and viewer freezes.
    • Frame 40 - Opens Notepad to display txt file if you click on the computer (this is good but unexpected).
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part VIII
    • Frame 13-14 - hot zones not obvious but accepts events.
    • Frame 15 - zoom out only displays a small part of this frame but zoom all displays all of it.
    • Frame 17-20 - SMIL warnings. Flashing lines don't appear.
    • Frame 30 - clicking just gives an SMIL warning instead of advancing to the next frame (you an use the nav bar).
    • Frame 31-32 - clicking doesn't do anything (can use nav bar).
    • Frame 34-36, 38, 40, 42, 44 - Trista's nighty has mysteriously turned magenta.
    SafariBrowser5.1.7

Based on Web Kit so should be very similar to Google Chrome. However Chrome now seems more ambitious. The animated filter appears black. Doesn't seem to support SVG fonts (so writing in fancy fonts tends not to appear). Going to another page from an SVG and then going back doesn't restart the SVG but returns to the state where you left it (useful). Filters don't seem to work. Some fonts displayed larger than in other viewers. onend events in SMIL don't seem to work. Can work slowly and slow down other applications when viewing large SVG files. Zoomed by Ctrl+mousewheel but if you zoom out, only the contents of the original viewBox is maintained. Pans by Shitf + drag but the up and down is reversed (drag left to go left, right to go right, up to go down and down to go up) which is confusing. Doesn't seem to have an "original view" function and even when you go on to another file, the pan and zoom is maintained.

    Orientation
Mare's (small girl) face turns black when her hot zone is removed. Reverts to normal after changing to another window and back.
    Book 1 title page
    Works quiet well.
    Part I
    • Frame 1 - hot zone translucent but animation activated when moused over. Number 1 or nav bar does not turn black.
    • Frame 7 - Dawn's bikini top in the wrong place.
    • Frame 10 - Name on user icon not displayed.
    • Frame 11 - Does not move on to next frame at end of animation.
    • Frame 13 - No text on badges. Does not move on to next frame at end of animation.
    Part II
    • Frame 7 - Animation works but doesn't move on to next frame.
    • Frame 12 - Animation works but doesn't move on to next frame.
    Part III
    • Frame 5 - Need to use the nav bar to advance to next frame.
    • Frame 11 - Tiffy doesn't appear (but her hot zone does and receives events).
    • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear or receive events. This is the first hot zone in the frame so it's unlcear if the others work.
    Part IV
    • Frame 18 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
    • Frame 21 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
    Part V
    • Frame 14 - Tista's nipples much darker than they should be, probably a filter problem.
    • Frame 23 - Pattern in window has gaps.
    • Frame 24, 28-29 - Safari tends to crash and re-start about here! (Although it now re-stars itself quickly.)
    • Frame 32 - Satalite missing.
    • Frame 33 - Buchannon's (an image referencing an SVGZ file) picture too small (his hot zone is the correct size).
    Part VI
    • Frame 7 - Black, possibly because it has a bitmap image as a background with filters over it.
    • Frame 11-13 - Name missing from user icon.
    • Frame 28 - Doesn't progress to next frame (have to use navbar).
    • Frame 29 - Only one animation (birds) runs. Doesn't progress to next frame (have to use navbar).
    • Frame 30 - Buchannon (image elements referencing SVGZ files) too small.
    Part VII
    • Frames 4-7 - Text "White Dove Conflict Resolution" doesn't appear.
    • Frame 8 - Text "Superheroes of Marsailes" doesn't appear. Links to mods database don't work. Doesn't move to next frame when clicked.
    • Frame 15 - Fairy's hot zone (fist one) doesn't receive events.
    • Frames 16-17 Dactura's hot zone (first one) doesn't receive events.
    • Frame 18 - Buchannon (image elements referencing SVGZ files) too small.
    • Frame 23 - This relies on filters to give texture and doesn't look anywhere as near as good as it should the way Safari has applied them.
    • Frame 32 - Hernandez's picture (image referencing SVGZ file) a bit too small and incorrectly clipped by clip path.
    • Frame 65 - Text for sound FX doesn't appear.
    Part VIII
    • Frame 14 - No text on Noriega's badge.
    • Frame 15 - Viewing awkward due to zoom not showing things outside the original viewBox and bizare pan.
    • Frame 16 - No text on Noriega's badge.
    • Frame 17-20 - Flashing lines on map don't appear. Last hot zone on Frame 20 won't disappear.
    • Frame 28 - Problematic because of zoom and pan.
    • Frame 30-31 - Clicking on the frame results in an SMIL warning (although this version of Safari is supposed to support SMIL) and the frame doesn't advance (can use forward button).
    • Frame 32 - Clicking on frame does not cause it to advance.
    • Frame 54 - No text on user icon.
    • Frame 58 - Flames are black. Would be better if zoom and pan was better.
    Part XI
    • Frame 3 - Land masses missing from Earth. Upon clicking, get a SMIL warning. After clicking the SMIL warning's OK button several times, you get the navigation frame but there's no changes in the frame first.
    • Frame 4 - Upon clicking, get a SMIL warning. No change to picture when OK button clicked. The second time, you get the navigation frame.
    • Frame 5 - Upon clicking, get a SMIL warning. When OK button clicked you get the navigation frame.
    • Frame 6 - Works but only accessible via the nav bar.
    • Frame 9 - Zooms from wrong location, probably because the animateTransform is executed but not the animateMotion which should run at the same time. Doesn't advance to next frame after animation.
    • Frame 11 - Zooms from wrong location, probably because the animateTransform is executed but not the animateMotion which should run at the same time. Doesn't advance to the next frame after the animation.
    End
    Good
Squigle - comes with BatikStandalone1.7Comes with the Batik Java toolkit. Has serious problems with most SVG files on this site, and seems to have a problem with a JavaScript function used in most files. Does support SMIL. Being a standalone, it can't handle links to non-SVG files or SVG files designed to be viewed on (X)HTML pages. Has an interesting feature of displaying the contents of desc elements.
