Washington — Classic Forms, Renewed Precision
The original Washington series was designed by Russell Bean between 1972 and 1973 and first released by Lettergraphics International Inc. as a film font family. It soon gained popularity with European font vendors, while the rights remained with the designer. Its history gives Washington a clear place in display typography, with forms rooted in the phototype era and suited to design work that calls for poise and recognition.
This digital iteration, launched 53 years after its original debut, restores the figures to their original design while adding careful functional improvements. It includes an alternate lowercase ‘s’, accessible via the features palette and Stylistic Set, along with ligatures for ‘ts’ and ‘Th’. Washington is well suited to branding, packaging, and user interfaces, offering classic elegance with modern functionality for contemporary digital and print use.
