Calenza — Valencia Streets in Type
Calenza is a contemporary type family inspired by the blue ceramic street name plaques found throughout the historic center of Valencia, Spain. Created in the early twentieth century, these signs carry a distinctive vernacular lettering style shaped by practical constraints, local craftsmanship, and the need for clear public communication. The project began with extensive photographic documentation and research into Valencia’s urban heritage. Rather than producing a strict historical revival, Calenza reinterprets the character and spirit of the original lettering as a modern, versatile typographic system for contemporary graphic design.
A defining feature of the source material is its use of varying letter widths, which helped fit street names of different lengths while maintaining visual consistency and legibility. This principle forms the foundation of the family, available in three widths: Regular, Condensed, and Compressed. Together, they give designers a broad range of expressive options, from compact editorial layouts to impactful headlines and branding applications. The family also includes multiple weights, true italics, small capitals, extensive OpenType features, and multilingual language support. A Variable Font version adds continuous control over width and weight.
Alongside the core family, Calenza Poster explores the more expressive side of the original street lettering. Designed as an all-caps display style, it preserves many distinctive details, irregularities, and construction quirks observed on the ceramic plaques. Several alternate characters with bold striped patterns introduce a contemporary graphic dimension while keeping a clear connection to the source material. Balancing historical inspiration with modern functionality, Calenza suits branding, editorial design, signage, packaging, cultural projects, and large-scale typography. Its mix of vernacular authenticity, architectural influence, and contemporary precision gives designers a distinctive visual voice rooted in the streets of Valencia.
